Forum Topic : Bachelor Degree in Social Work
Submitted by Arjun on 12/06/2009 - 10:01 PM
The Bachelor Degree Programme in Social Work is aimed at training individuals who are already working or desire to work in the Development and Welfare sectors. Political leaders, policy makers and community leaders all over the world have identified the well being of individuals as a key priority in governance. With globalisation and emerging concerns in issues related to women, environment, man made and natural disasters, human rights, mental heath, HIV/ AIDS and so on, opportunities for employment and career growth for the already employed are expected to increase in non-governmental and governmental sectors. Professionally trained social workers are well qualified to be employed in these sectors due to the following advantages:

1. Interdisciplinary knowledge base.
2. Training in a wide variety of interpersonal skills.
3. Field work experience during which skills and knowledge are applied under supervision of a professional social worker.
4. Exposure to the working of development/ welfare organizations, problem areas and the implementation of development/ welfare programmes.
5. Entry into a body of professional social workers and related support systems.
6. Imbibing appropriate attitudes required for working with individuals, groups and communities.

Eligibility:
You can apply for a MSW with a bachelor's in another area of study.

Depending on the school's requirements, you may need to complete additional prerequisites.

As far as an entrance exam, you'll need to inquire with the School of SW where you are considering applying. They vary from school to school.

In general, the school wants to be sure that you are dedicated to helping others through working in the field of Human Services and that you have the background and self-awareness to do so.
